Pattern review: Simplicity 8797

One of the most unique things about sewing your own jacket or coat is that you can customize it to your liking and personality. My closet is filled with different outfits to wear, but I never think to sew any outerwear garments. In Texas, you may or may not need a coat in the winter because the weather is soooo unpredictable, but lately, I've been wanting to strictly sew jackets and coats. I wanted to create something that is unique and can be dressed up or down. When I came across the Simplicity 8797 pattern, I instantly knew I wanted to make this coat!

Low pile fur coats have recently been the trend in fashion. I knew I had to have one in my wardrobe. I chose view A. I initially wanted to make it in a soft pink color, but unfortunately, the fabric I liked was sold out. I opted for this jewel toned purple color instead. Now this particular fabric is not a low pile fur. It is a soft minky- like fabric and is medium weight. I wish the fabric was a little lighter in weight so I would've draped a little bit better. For the lining, I used a darker shade of purple satin found here.

What I like most about this pattern is that it has pockets deep enough to fit my car key fob, my lip gloss and a small pocket wallet. Now here is where I got creative: instead of lining the pockets with the same satin lining, I chose to line it with a beautiful violet velvet fabric I had in my stash. It definitely kept my hands warm when I recently wore it.

I cut the pattern in a size S. In my opinion, this pattern runs a little big, but I guess it depends on how you want it to fit. You can sew a button to close the coat, but it is optional, and I chose not to add a button closure to the front. For the buttons on the back tab, I purchased them here.

Overall, I'm happy with how the coat turned out. I will definitely sew this pattern again in a different color.
