I absolutely love a long and dramatic dress! It's one of my most favorite things to sew. I purchased Simplicity 8013 about 5 years ago simply because of how the picture looked on the front of the pattern. It was giving me all kinds of vintage vibes. Back then, I must say, that I was still new at sewing so I wanted to wait until I felt comfortable with my skillset before I gave it a shot. This pattern requires about 8 yards of fabric. I purchased this beautiful olive green fabric here. If you're not a fan of olive green, no worries, they have a large variety of colors to chose from. I chose an animal print charmeuse fabric from my fabric stash for the lining.
If you're new to sewing, I'd definitely recommend that you try this pattern with test fabric before actually sewing which is what I did. This pattern will definitely test your sewing skills and it is tailored towards a more advanced seamstress. Some of the techniques you will need to master first before sewing this dress is: gathering, narrow hems, installing an invisible zipper, bell sleeves, soft pleats, and darts. If you are already familiar and comfortable with these techniques this pattern shouldn't be too difficult for you.
I decided to sew view D. I love everything about this design from the dramatic bell sleeves, the oversized waist tie belt, the length, and the cut of the bodice. The bodice of this pattern runs kind of small so I'd recommend sizing up. I cut a size 14. There are several pattern pieces and steps so be sure to pace yourself. LOL. I made this dress in steps. One day prepping the pattern, one day cutting the pattern pieces, about a week working on one section at a time, and one day to let the dress hang overnight before finishing the hem.
Overall, I enjoyed sewing this dress because all the steps were planned out and I took my time. I'm happy with how it turned out. This dress is perfect for the holidays or a special occasion. I will definitely make this one again.
