Since it's the winter season I wanted to sew a coat to add to my wardrobe. The weather here in Texas is sooo crazy. This season, however has been really cold so I thought I'd better hurry and get some outerwear sewn. When I saw the beautiful faux fur coat that Beaute' J'adore sewed I knew I had to make my own. Unfortunately, the pattern she used is out of print so I was out of luck. A year and a half later, I was really surprised that McCall's printed M7257, a new pattern for working with faux fur fabric.
I chose to use the same fabric that Nikki (Beaute' J'adore) used when she made hers. It's a really beautiful white, black, and gray fabric from Mood Fabrics. I purchased 2 yards (I didn't want to run out and this fabric is usually sold out). I did have enough fabric left over to make my 5 year old daughter a coat which I will finish later. I used a satin black lining for the inside. I cut view D in a size small.
I honestly thought I would struggle making this coat because I've never sewn a coat before and this was my first time working with fur. It really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. If you plan on making anything with fur, I strongly suggest that you cut your fabric outdoors because those little hairs get EVERYWHERE. Since it's been so cold outside lately, I opted to cut my fabric on my sewing table in my garage. Trust me, you'll be glad you did. I made sure to trim the fur really low within the seam allowances, which made sewing the seams a whole lot easier.
I thought the pattern was easy to follow, and I will definitely be making this again in a different color. I will probably sew the next one a tad bit bigger just so I can have a little bit more wiggle room. I liked the fact that it has deep lined pockets so it will be great to wear on a night out when I don't want to carry a handbag.
